LP3996SD-3030/NOPB Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Texas Instruments recommends a 2-layer or 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane on the bottom layer and a thermal relief pattern on the top layer to minimize thermal resistance. A thermal pad on the bottom of the device should be connected to the ground plane.

  • To ensure stability, a minimum output capacitance of 10uF with an ESR of 1ohm or less is recommended. Additionally, the output capacitor should be placed close to the device and connected to the output pin with a low-impedance path.

  • Although the datasheet specifies a maximum input voltage of 15V, it's recommended to limit the input voltage to 12V to ensure reliable operation and minimize the risk of damage to the device.

  • While ceramic capacitors can be used, they may not be the best choice due to their potential for resonance and noise coupling. A 1uF to 10uF film or electrolytic capacitor is recommended for the input bypass capacitor to ensure stable operation.

  • The power dissipation of the LP3996SD-3030/NOPB can be calculated using the formula: Pd = (Vin - Vout) x Iout + (Vin x Iq), where Vin is the input voltage, Vout is the output voltage, Iout is the output current, and Iq is the quiescent current.
