A 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane and a separate analog ground plane is recommended. Keep the analog and digital grounds separate and connect them at a single point. Use a star topology for the power supply connections and keep the sensitive analog nodes away from the digital signals.

Use a thermocouple with a high accuracy calibration, ensure good thermal contact between the thermocouple and the measurement point, and use a cold junction compensation (CJC) sensor. Also, calibrate the system by measuring the temperature with a reference thermometer and adjusting the offset and gain accordingly.

The maximum cable length depends on the type of thermocouple and the noise environment. As a general rule, keep the cable length as short as possible (less than 10 feet) and use shielded cables to minimize noise pickup. Use a twisted pair cable with a shield connected to the analog ground.

The CJC sensor output is a digital signal that indicates the temperature of the cold junction. You can use this output to compensate for the cold junction temperature in your application. You can also use an external CJC sensor and connect it to the LTC2980IY#PBF's CJC input pin.
