  • The maximum output power of the TOP255YN is 250W, but it can be derated based on the input voltage, output voltage, and ambient temperature.

  • The transformer selection depends on the input voltage, output voltage, and power rating. A good starting point is to use the transformer design tool provided by Power Integrations or consult the application notes.

  • The BYPASS pin is used to connect a bypass capacitor to reduce the voltage ripple on the output. It is recommended to use a 10nF to 100nF capacitor to improve the output voltage regulation.

  • The TOP255YN has a built-in OVP feature that can be enabled by connecting a resistor divider network from the output voltage to the OVP pin. The resistor values can be calculated using the formula provided in the datasheet.

  • A good layout practice is to keep the input and output stages separate, use a solid ground plane, and minimize the loop area of the transformer and output rectifier. Thermal management is critical, and a heat sink or thermal pad is recommended to keep the junction temperature below 125°C.
